This weekend Jenny picked up a copy of the 2007 New York City Humane Scorecard from the League of Humane voters of NYC. This group, like others around the country, keeps an eye on animal issues while encouraging elected officials to vote with compassion. They are non-partisan and have supported candidates of all political stripes based on their work and voting records on legislation that helps animals.
We’re sure you’ve been hearing a lot about Super Tuesday tomorrow. While these primaries focus on representatives for the national parties, now is a good time to take the interest you have and channel it into educating yourself about animal legislation in your communities. Search for ”League of Humane Voters” along with the name of your city or state using goodsearch.com to find chapters in your area. Many groups have websites or contact info that allows you to find out about pending legislation (e.g. making it mandatory for pet stores to have fire sprinklers - surprisingly not a law in NYC) and how it affects animals in your cities or states. Many also offer scorecards that allow you to keep tabs on the voting records of elected officials and hold them accountable.
The ASPCA has a slogan reminding us that “We are their voice!” In the US, representative democracy means that elected officials are our voice. Make sure your legislators know that you are speaking loud and clear for animals. Encourage them to enact laws that promote compassion and protect animals.
