Tomorrow the US is scheduled to sell gas and oil leases on millions of acres inhabited by polar bears in Alaska. Activists (and polar bear enthusiasts) are putting pressure on the government to classify these incredible animals as an endangered species. As of now the government is willing to categorize them as “threatened” but not endangered, thus leaving the door open for loopholes in protection. Regardless of their current label, the US Fish and Wildlife Services has decided to wait until after the sale of the rights to make a further classification.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare has started an activist campaign for this cause. By going to their website, you can read more about it and send a letter to your representatives requesting their help in protecting polar bears. Again, the sale is scheduled for tomorrow and therefore this is urgent. Please take the short time required to send a pre-drafted letter to your representative.
