Daily Walrus - Helping People Help Animals

Email Signature | January 2, 2008

So the holidays are over and you are back to work and/or getting ready for another grueling semester at school.  With so much on your plate, how can you possibly take time to advocate for animals?  Here is an easy way to get the message out every time you send an e-mail.  Five minutes of your time today will allow you to spread a message of compassion towards animals each time you click “send” by setting up an e-mail signature (or editing your already existing sig.).  An email signature is text that is automatically placed at the bottom of an email, typically including your name and phone number, or other information like a quote or URL.  This is where you can get creative!  You can remind people to spay/neuter their pets, list a stat about meat consumption and poor health, or even include an animal rights quote.

Setting up a signature is incredibly easy.  But since there are so many e-mail providers (gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc…) or managers (outlook, thunderbird, etc…) we can’t really provide a useful how-to here.  So to set up your new animal-friendly message, log into your e-mail, search for “signature” in the HELP or FAQ search window, and follow the instructions.  Here is a link to an about.com compilation of how-to’s for various e-mail providers.  But we recommend trying the HELP option first.

Here is Ryan’s new sig…

It is my view that the vegetarian manner of living by its purely physical effect on the human temperament would most beneficially influence the lot of mankind.
– Albert Einstein, From Letter to ‘Vegetarian Watch-Tower’, 27 December 1930

 And here is Jenny’s…

The question is not, Can they reason?, nor Can they talk? but, Can they suffer? Jeremy Bentham

Of course, both also include a link to www.dailywalrus.wordpress.com (if you don’t have a site/blog of your own, consider including a link to ours to help spread the word!).

There are plenty of great quotes out there on the web – just do some searching for phrases like “animal quotes” or “animal rights quotes”  Or use that big brain of yours and think of one on your own.  So what’s your email signature?  Share it with others as a comment to this post!

About author

Hello - we are Jenny and Ryan, a couple living in Brooklyn, New York. We are both busy with school and work but try to take time to do something every day to make the world a better place for animals. Occasionally we may link to outside websites for additional resources, but we do not necessarily endorse all policies of these organizations. Despite the title of our blog, the focus is not only on walruses. So what's with the title? We named this blog after our cat, Wally, aka The Walrus. We are the proud parents of two cats (Wally and Tito) and one dog (Luigi).
