Daily Walrus - Helping People Help Animals

Cruelty-free shopping | January 8, 2008

Everyone needs personal care products to help keep them looking and smelling like a million bucks.  So its not surprisng that the cosmetic and personal care product industries bank billions of dollars each year.  Unfortunately, much of that money is spent on products that have been tested on animals.

If you are unfamiliar with what goes on during animal testing for cosmetics, click here to read up on Proctor and Gamble’s (makers of Tide, Bounce, Secret, Sure and Crest, to name a few) practices.  It’s pretty horrific stuff.  Many people have told us that they thought companies simply shampooed the rabbits or other animals for testing purposes.  Sorry little Timmy, Santa Clause isn’t real either.  These tests are downright barbaric.

So what can you do to help put an end to unnecessary animal testing?  The easiest thing you can do is buy cruelty-free products when your old stuff runs out.  Then continue to boycott companies like Proctor and Gamble until they make the switch to alternative testing methods (already used by many humane companies).  To check out a list of cosmetic and personal care companies that do NOT test on animals click here.  Download and print a handy pocket version of the list by clicking here.  Or if you feel like spreading the word about cruelty-free products, order 50 of the pocket guides for $2.50 here.  You can pass them out to friends and family, leave a stack at the counter of your local drug store, market, or library.

  1. I was very happy to see that my need to go green has also been helpful with preventing animal cruelty. I started using Method products and was very happy to see them on your good lists!! Makes me feel even better about my choice to go green!

About author

Hello - we are Jenny and Ryan, a couple living in Brooklyn, New York. We are both busy with school and work but try to take time to do something every day to make the world a better place for animals. Occasionally we may link to outside websites for additional resources, but we do not necessarily endorse all policies of these organizations. Despite the title of our blog, the focus is not only on walruses. So what's with the title? We named this blog after our cat, Wally, aka The Walrus. We are the proud parents of two cats (Wally and Tito) and one dog (Luigi).
