Daily Walrus - Helping People Help Animals

Send NJ’s Governor Corzine a big thanks! | January 8, 2008

On December 20th 2007, New Jersey became the second state in the nation to ban animal testing for cosmetic products (if humane alternatives exist – and they most certainly do).  The first state to do this was California.  In 2009, animal tests for cosmetics will be banned in the European Union .

While the NJ and CA bans haven’t gotten much media attention, they are huge steps in the right direction for the U.S.  Please take 5 minutes today to contact NJ Governor John Corzine and thank him for singing this ban into law.  You can reach him electronically by using this form on his web page.  Or call him at  609-292-6000.  What should you say?  We live in New York, so our letters look something like the one below.  Feel free to use this letter as a template for yours, or just cut and paste it making changes for your name and state.

Governor Corzine,

I would like to thank you for signing into law a ban on the cruel and unnecessary testing of cosmetic products on animals.  While I am not a resident of New Jersey, I hope that my home state of [insert state here] will adopt a similar ban.  I plan on contacting my state and local representatives and encouraging them to follow New Jersey’s lead.

Sincerely,
[Your Name Here]

If you live in NJ, tell the Governor how proud you are to live in such a progressive state.

After you contact Governor Corzine, let your representatives know that your state should follow NJ’s lead.  New York and Arizona have legislation pending, so if you live in those states please act now.  If you live elsewhere, it’s still important that you make your voices heard.  To find contact info for your state and local representatives, we recommend going to your states’ homepages (since many of our readers are from NY or VA, here are the links for the NY State Assembly, NY State Senate, and an all-in-one state resource for VA).

About author

Hello - we are Jenny and Ryan, a couple living in Brooklyn, New York. We are both busy with school and work but try to take time to do something every day to make the world a better place for animals. Occasionally we may link to outside websites for additional resources, but we do not necessarily endorse all policies of these organizations. Despite the title of our blog, the focus is not only on walruses. So what's with the title? We named this blog after our cat, Wally, aka The Walrus. We are the proud parents of two cats (Wally and Tito) and one dog (Luigi).
